10 things you didn’t know about Coconut Oil & CBD

Coconut Oil & CBD has a myriad of uses, it has become one of the most popular oil combinations on the market today.  Uses range from cooking, oil pulling for oral health & weight loss to skin protection and dry scalp relief.

The history

But how did this magical oil go from cherished and appreciated too demonized and rejected?  It is a simple answer…Money! What was once a valued and healthy oil used for cooking and beauty, turned into a demonized saturated oil. American farmers wanted to sell their soybean oil to consumers rather than the tropical island palm & coconut oils.

It was not hard to convince the public that soybean was a healthier alternative considering saturated oils. A lot of health professionals talk about how saturated fats are connected to high cholesterol and heart disease. Although the saturated fat in coconut oil is a medium-chain triglyceride and in fact raises your beneficial cholesterol (HDL.)  

The switch from coconut oil to soybean oil came with little to no research on the actual side effects of soybean. It came with promises that it was a healthier and more affordable option and in fact it was not. Soybean oil is hard to digest, causing bloating, constipation, allergic reactions and fatigue. 

How it helps us

Coconut oil is constantly researched for its ability to treat and manage diseases like Alzheimers, diabetes, heart disease & inflammation. It helps to prevent infections and overall illnesses caused by bacteria, such as yeast infections. Coconut oil doesn’t just remove bacteria in the gut. It’s also extremely beneficial for getting rid of bad bacteria in the mouth.

Oil pulling is a trendy way to care for gum disease and mouth infections.  Swishing the oil through your teeth and gums daily for 20 minutes can draw out infection & bacteria.  I have  friends who have struggled with gum disease and oral health that have tried this method with good results.  This does not mean it will work for everyone but I believe it is certainly worth trying an alternative method to expensive and invasive dental treatments.

Coconut Oil & CBD is wonderful smelling and smoothing, a natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker, and faster. The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.coconut oil on hair helps reduce protein loss in all hair types. And, because this oil is rich in Lauric acid and easily penetrates inside the hair shaft it is great to use as a daily conditioner. Coconut Oil for hair also helps lock in moisture giving it a gorgeous glow and shine. It has helped my hair recover from damage caused by overexposure to the elements and from coloring.

Coconut oil can clog pores, and may contribute to acne breakouts in some people. If you have oily skin already, coconut oil might cause blackheads, pimples, or whiteheads to form.  Because of this, beauty products contain MCT oil instead.  

Formulating Coconut Oil & CBD

MCT is fractionated coconut oil, meaning it has been processed, the multi-chain triglycerides have been removed from the coconut oil, and remain liquid at room temperature it’s mild flavor.  It is popular in the Formulator store because of this and easily mixes with CBD and other essential oils & flavors.

Coconut Oil & CBD is also a natural sunscreen containing a natural SPF of 6-8. It is one of my favorite ingredients in my homemade sunblock, along with carrot seed & red raspberry and hemp seed oil, all containing an SPF of 6-30!
