The ultimate story behind the “Patron Saint of Cannabis & Hemp”

Jack Herer. You may not have heard of him, but if you’re formulating with CBD, then he’s a big reason why you’re able to…

Oh how happy Jack would be to see the current Hemp Rush happening around the world. Shelves are inundated with CBD products. From gas stations to local health food stores, products range from tincture bottles and hard candy to healing salves and wrinkle creams.

The holistic uses of the cannabis hemp plant is what makes it so special.  It’s not just medicine. Its potential to help & heal the world is colossal.

Jack Herer

“There is only one plant that can completely substitute for fossil fuel. The plant is an annual that grows in all 50 states. It is the fastest growing sustainable biomass on the planet. It can produce paper, fiber, food, and fuel,” said Jack.

Jack Herer is an American author and activist for cannabis.  He earned the nickname “The Hemperor” after writing his book, ‘The Emperor Wears No Clothes.’  During the 1970’s & 80’s Jack learned about the amazing uses for and environmental benefits from growing and consuming hemp. He called it “the Earth’s most important resource.”  And perhaps it is!

Jack was not always a pot smoking activist. He was born and raised in New York, a genuine Goldwater Republican.  He was a Neon sign repairman after serving in Korea as an Army military police officer. He married and started a family, living the American dream.  At thirty years old and freshly divorced, a friend introduced him to the world of cannabis.  Thrilled by the effects, he decided to learn as much as he could about the plant and its value.

Everywhere he went he seemed to have people sharing knowledge and experiences with him.  Before Jack knew it he was writing books about hemp and on the expressway to becoming an unstoppable cannabis advocate.  Herer’s ultimate goal: legalize marijuana & hemp, and release all people from jail who are there for cannabis related reasons.  A mission that is still being pursued by many.

Many states have decriminalized cannabis possession and legalized the use of marijuana for recreational & medicinal purposes. Officers still make more arrests for marijuana than any other drug. (according to FBI data)  Over 40 percent of incarcerated people are in jail for cannabis related reasons.

The Hemp Plant

Recreational use of cannabis is legal in eleven states: Alaska, Colorado, California, Oregon, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Vermont, Washington, and Illinois.

33 states, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands have approved medical marijuana/cannabis programs, with Hemp being legal under federal law, so long as it contains less than 0.3 percent THC.

Hemp is incredibly sustainable as a crop.  It is a renewable natural resource, and has an abundant amount of constructive uses in the world; from making fiber, paper, fuel, concrete, food and medicine. Jack says, “It is the best thing the world has ever had .”

Deforestation has rid the planet of over half of its trees. Hemp is the answer to stopping this from happening any further. Our planet can not sustain this.  Hemp grows to maturity in only four months. Why not use this renewable & sustainable resource?

Hemp has an immense global history, dating as far back as 8,000 BCE.  People have used hemp for pottery, ropes, seed, oil, textiles, paints, paper, fuel, and medicine throughout history. Puritans brought hemp to America. It was used for rope, sails and caulking on ships. Maritime uses for hemp were popular because of its antimicrobial properties.

Americans during the colonial era were “required” by law to grow hemp. In Virginia, during the years 1763-1767 it was actually ILLEGAL to NOT grow hemp! It was considered a legal form of tender from 1631 thru the early 1800’s.  Americans even paid their taxes with hemp!

In 1970, President Nixon signed the Controlled Substance Act. The CSA covers schedule 1 drugs (considered to be addictive & most dangerous), including LSD, MDMA, heroin, and marijuana. The classification of Cannabis being a schedule 1 drug eliminated it’s options to further better the world with its natural ability to cleanse the environment and heal the body & soul.  Unfortunately it has put the brakes on research and development regarding medicinal uses for cannabis for years.

Until now. Now we are witnessing a breakthrough with the research on CBD & THC and its ability to help humans and animals alike. Rick Simpsons Oil surfaced the cancer treating full spectrum THC oil as being powerful medicine. Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is a concentrated cannabis extract. Herer was a believer in the ability of RSO to heal cancer and other illnesses. Studies are beginning to prove him right.

Before the demonization of marijuana, hemp was used as mainstream medicine. Treating over 100 different ailments…asthma & coughing, nausea, menstrual pain, glaucoma, arthritis, epilepsy, muscle spasms, insomnia, headache & migraine relief, just to list a few.

“If you substitute marijuana for tobacco and alcohol, you’ll add eight to 24 years to your life.” …

Jack Herer

Slowly we are waking up to a new reality of using Hemp, cannabis, marijuana as holistic healing medicine.  Erasing hundreds of years of mis-information and replacing the negative stigma with a positive one, does not happen overnight though. The battle to embrace hemp and all it has to offer is still happening today.  Once again now in history we see the resurgence of Cannabis and its medicinal uses being fought for.

At Garden Om and the Formulator store we are dedicated to producing sustainable, Organic full spectrum CBD oil. It is with great honor that we help facilitate the production of healing and wellness products.

This is why we do what we do.

  1. What an eye opening article! I had no idea that Americans used hemp so much in the past, how fascinating that the tobacco industry is so powerful to have convinced everyone that marijuana is a schedule 1 drug and is dangerous.
